Links on Sunday

A little late with a somewhat reduced linkage this week, but I have been busy. I’m almost at inbox zero (down from almost a thousand).

Hopefully back to normal on Friday.

Clean up Time (Subtune 1)

My third remix was based on Karl Hörnell’s Clean Up Time (Subtune 1). I was inspired to remix this track after hearing Boz playing this on his BBB show on SlayRadio and as I’d promised Anna Black another crappy remix for her Anorak show the following Monday, I quickly knocked this one up.

I usually like to change the notes about in a crappy remix, so it sounds comically out of tune, that was difficult to do with this remix, as when a changed the notes it was almost impossible to notice. So I added some really basic slightly of time drums (inspired by many a poor Amiga MOD using ST-01 sounds) and that strange vocal sample, which again was found on the internet.

Ok, you are now fully up to date with my crappy back catalogue.

Ace 2 (As terrible as Top Gun mix) c64 remix

The second crappy remix I created was Rob Hubbard’s Ace 2 title tune. The Game was coded by Ian Martin, with Graphics by Damon Redmond, was designed Ian Martin and was released in 1987 by Cascade.

I wasn’t too fond of this remix, as because of the length of the original track it was far too long for anyone to listen to while keeping their sanity. So I had the idea of writing the lead as it was being played by someone who would keep getting the notes wrong, and would get progressively worse until it gets so bad he just gives up the song before the end. Finally I added some terrible quality Top Gun samples I found on the internet for that final touch.

Commando (It’s supposed to be rubbish) C64 remix

My first crappy remix was based on Rob Hubbard’s theme from the Commodore 64 version of Commando. The game was developed by Chris Butler, with Graphics by Rory Green and Chris Harvey, and was released in 1985 by Elite. This video was knocked together in Windows Live Movie Maker by myself

This is my favourite remix of the three I’ve completed so far, as it’s short (something I’ve found to be very important) and very silly.

A New Blog and Lent Progress.

A couple of things for you, firstly I’ve got a new blog called  crappyremix about my progress towards deliberately making some of the worst c64 Remixes ever.

Secondly a little update my lent fasting.

  • Tea – I’ve stuck to having only one cup of Tea at breakfast time. This is a major achievement for me.
  • Fizzy Pop – Not touched any pop despite being teased by Cherry Lucazade a couple of times
  • Sweets/Chocolate – Had a one little sweet, as I forgot I was off them, but other than that nothing.
  • Downloading Crap – This one hasn’t gone so well. I wanted to keep the downloading to the weekend, but haven’t managed it.
  • Naughty Films – I never would touch such evil things anyway, so no problem.
  • Staying up Late – Doing well with this have gone to bed early (by my usually standards) every night.
  • Chips – Had some in the Town on Saturday, well nobody is prefect.

The family has been supportive, and by supportive I mean they’ve been asking me to make Tea and sending me to shop to buy them chocolate.

Making Crappy C64 Remixes.

Creating music is a hard and frustrating experience especially when, like me, you have a very limited talent for it. However I was over the moon when I saw the Crap Remix Compo over at Remix64’s forum as it seemed right up my proverbial street (I live on a road).

The idea of the the competition is to intentionally create bad music, which is a cover/remix of an existing Commodore 64 tune, but the twist is to make it so bad it’s funny.

This is actually much harder than it sounds, but after playing around a while with a few different tunes. I have managed to do this to some classic c64 tunes, in a way I thought was both terrible and pretty funny, which I was quiet proud of it in a strange sort of way.

These tracks have also been played on the Anna Black Anorak on Slay Radio to a great response.

This blog is document my attempts to create a full and terrible album full of these tracks.

I’m full of flu today.

Bleh, more next week.

Pancakes and Lent 2010

PancakesIt’s the time of year that Christians, and a few non-believers like myself, indulge a large amount of pancakes and then see if they can give up something they like for forty days.

I have no shortage of things to give up for, and I’ve even been given some suggestions (shared by the person named in the brackets)

  • Tea – Well I can’t give up Tea completely, but I could try and cut it down to one cup a day.
  • Fizzy Pop (John) – I don’t drink pop that often, so I’ll go for this.
  • Sweets/Chocolate – I have the occasional Chocolate, but I can go without.
  • Downloading Crap – Will I can’t go with downloading my crap, but I can keep it to the weekends.
  • Naughty Films – I never would touch such evil things anyway.
  • Staying up Late – Yeah, I need to knock the late nights on the head anyway
  • Chips (pramblingpaul) – Well, they are very bad for me, so why not?
  • Internet/Computer (darren) – Absolutely no chance.
  • Sarcasm (matthewthompson) – Again absolutely no chance (I did try, but only lasted a few hours)
  • Procrastination (Bill) – I wish I could give this one up.
  • Cheese (lonewolfrepose) – Why? I like cheese to much to give it up, also it’s in most of the stuff I eat.
  • Transformers (jim) – They are all boxed up and hidden away anyway. I think the terrible films ruined them for me.
  • Pointless exercises in self improvement that last a few days under a religious justification. (Pete) – NEVER!!!

So I’m giving up a few things and reducing some others. Lets see how long this lasts, do you think I will be able to manage the full 40 days for any of them?
