Weekend links – problems with opening my text messages

Another week and another weekend links post that is on schedule

More proper posts coming shortly.

Facebook Warning PLEASE KEEP YOUR KIDS SAFE

Recently I’ve seen the following message posted on several status updates on Facebook from Teesside all the way up to Newcastle

PLEASE KEEP YOUR KIDS SAFE, DO NOT LET THEM WALK ANYWERE ALONE, TO SCHOOL OR TO CORNER SHOP BECAUSE SOME BASTARD IS GOING AROUND TRYING TO PICK KIDS UP OFF OUR STREETS HE IS SAID TO BE WHITE, AGED 40-45 WITH A LOCAL NORTH EAST ACCENT. HE DRIVING A SMALL WHITE VAN WITH BLACKED OUT WINDOWS ON THE REAR DOORS. COPY N PASTE TO YOUR PROFILE SO YOUR FRIENDS CAN READ IT

Being the old cynic that I am, I imedintaly smelt a rat. The warning has all the hall marks of a fake, it’s all in uppercase, it has now details, of a time and a place, and advises people to ‘Copy n paste‘ it.

After a little bit of research a found the story in the Hartlepool Mail and it seems it is true that a van driver twice approached children asking them if they wanted a lift (but didn’t leave the vehicle) on Friday 9th October in Hartlepool.

I just wish people when posting (and reposting) this sort of warning that they provide this sort of information, link to the source, and write it in readable English.

Weekend Links – I’m really struggling to read your handwriting

This weekend I present a slimmed down version of my favourite links

Four weeks in a row now.

Google gives me a Wave

Google wave

This morning I received a invite to Google Wave, thanks to the lovely IamKat (She doesn’t have invites left, so don’t hassle her with requests). I’ve had a wee play, and my first though is that it’s still got a way to go before it has a hope of changing the way people work. Going forward I shall be having a play with integrating this with WordPress for this blog and ObscureInternet.

Project still Awesome

Just to clear something up, if you are thinking that because I’ve started 40 things to do before I’m 40 that I’ve given up on Project Awesome you are very much mistaken.

Project Awesome is what will help me complete my 40 things goals.  Currently I am focused on two closely related goals

Spend less time fooling around on the net and more time actually working

I’ve set up a rule on the wireless router that limits my allowed time on the internet, this means I won’t be tempted by mindless internet browsing while I’m working on important task and it will also help me focus on the internet based tasks as I know the time I can do these is limited.

Wake up when my alarm clock goes off

As I’ve stopped myself using the computer late at night (with the odd exception) I now have extra time to wind down before going to bed. This has helped with my sleeping and therefore it has been easier for me to get up on a morning. I’m far from perfect, but I’m getting closer to getting up when I want to.

Obviously I’ve been doing other things, but these two have been my main focus.

It’s now three week in a row that I managed to give your recommended weekend reading on time, so enjoy.
