The Weekage Linkpile

I didn’t give any links last week (or blog posts for that matter) so lets pretend this weekends lot makes up for it,

A little change

I’ve spent the last few hours tidying up the look of the blog a little.

The main changes are in the sidebar. I’ve add the Category Cloud WidgetFlexo Archives and the Get Recent Comments plugins. Reorganised the order of the sidebar items and used Ray Cheung‘s free social media icons to  link to my Social profiles.  To get the most out of the Category Cloud Widget I’ll have to ot amended the categories of a lot of old (pre-wordpress) posts, as most are still set to the default category which is Random.

Finally I’ve added a little CSS to make blog comments look a little clearer and use gravatar images too.

C64 Loading Screens Vectorised

Over at DailyRodent forum member Mugsy has been vectorising some C64 loading screens, grabbed from an emulator. The results are rather amazing, so I thought I would collect them all on one page for your viewing pleasure. Click to view Desktop sized.

Weekend Linkypoos.

I like these weekend link thingies, they are so easy to do they almost write themself.  This weekend linkage is as follows;

I’m training with Sensi Shingo Ohgami this weekend, and getting quite nervous at the thought

The Aquatic Games on Jim’ll Fix It?

After the James Pond 2 Robocod post, I got a message from on Facebook asking “Remember also Aquatic Games?”
It’s a good question, although I didn’t own the game, I do remember The Aquatic Games, it was a underwater Olympics style game featuring James Pond.
The Interesting thing is this question awakened another Aquatic Games memory in my head in, a memory I’m not sure is 100% accurate. This  memory is seeing Aquatic Games being developed on a episode of Jim’ll Fix It.

A young lad wrote a letter to Jim alongs the lines of “Dear Jim, Can you fix it for me to be in a video game”. And thus the lad was swept of to Millennium Interactive (I guess beggars can’t be choosers) to help with development, and appear in a game. The young lad even got to meet and help Richard Joseph with the music.

So I am wondering did this really happen, or is just a trick of my ageing mind? Does anyone else have memories of this? I’ve done some research but the internet has been no help.

My New phone the Nokia E71

It seems like I’ve not had a new phone in ages. I’m not sure how long I have my K810 but I know it is getting on a bit as it’s got a fair bit of ware and tear, and the battery life is now very low. I’ve also got through about half a dozen hands free kits while listening to music and podcasts using it, the Sony Erickson hands free kits seem to have a reoccurring problem with one of the speakers failing. Most importantly my current SIM in my phone doesn’t give me access to the internet which is obviously most unacceptable. So when I saw 3′s offer of the Nokia E71 with 200 minutes, 1GB Internet, and 4096 text messages a month for a meagre 20 quid last weekend, I snapped it up.

I’m so happy I did, as the phone is great. Let me tell you why, but remember I haven’t had new a top spec phone in years so some of my amazement at the phones features may make me look very dated.

First of all, is the Internet, as well as having 3G/3.5G Internet it has the ability to connect to my home wireless network, which means I’m always connected to the Internet while I’m at home. This combined with the Twitter, Instant Messenger and Facebook applications, means I’m can connected all of the time, even when I’m in bed or in the bath  (places that I would take the laptop).

Another great feature is the Qwerty keyboard. It’s great to have a proper keyboard on the phone, so I quickly type text messages or something on the internet without having to user predictive text. A phone with a Qwerty keyboard with lots of free text messages and Ping.fm’s update via text means I can update my status on my social networks as once, and very regular.

The phone also has a good Music Player which also has support for playing and downloading podcasts making it a great portable MP3 Player. Another useful music application is the Internet Radio, So now I can listen to SlayRadio, Radio6581 (I haven’t get SceneSat working as yet) and a number of other Internet radio stations live while on the go.

The final great feature I’ll mention is the built in GPS (Global Positioning System). I’ve downloaded Google Maps to use with it, so I’ve not got an excuse to ever get lost again.

The only problem I’ve had with the phone is Nokia’s typically horrible user interface (I’ve been spoilt by years of using Sony Ericsson great User Interfaces)

Star Trek NERD RAGE Review

Saw Star Trek last night, as I mentioned in previous posts I did have a lot of mixed feelings about the film especially as it involves rewriting Star Trek History and especially that the people responsible for this re-write are the people who wrote the appalling Transformers.

Star Trek fortunately is a much better film than Transformers and is a good summer blockbuster, but still suffers from the a lot of the same faults as transformers, and ultimately left me feeling underwhelmed.This blockbuster Star Trek has lost it’s soul, but everything is so shot so close up in super-tight, million-edits a second fashion, every goes so quickly, you’ll barely notice. So I’ve summarised them below for you;

NERD RAGE (and major spoilers) AHEAD!

First of all the Title of this movie is Star Trek, no subtitle, just Star Trek. I mean how cheeky is that?

It suffers from ‘Shaky Camera Action’ which seems to be a rather annoying habit of recent action movies. Most of the action works well despite the shaky camera, however some of action is rather silly and over the top, why is Sulu doing spinning jumps while he is, rather strangely in itself, fencing with a Romulan? Also why did the brief fight between Kirk and Spock look like it had been lifted from a Jason Bourne film .

The Acting is generally good, where the script allows it to be. Various lines of dialogue, are crudely inserted from previous films and television episodes, therefore the actors have to suffer through shoehorned Star Trek lines such as  ‘Damnit Jim’, ‘I’m a doctor, not a [insert profession here], and the most offensive ‘She kannie take anymore’ which ruined a tense scene. Despite having the majority of these sorts of lines Karl Urban shines in his roles as Bones. Poor Eric Bana has nothing really to do, as is just a generic villain (plot question: What did Nero and his crew do while he was waiting those 25 years).

The script is the films biggest weakness. As you probably know the plot be now involves time travel to giving the (lazy) writes scope to change a few things. These changes do start of as minor, simply giving us Chris Pine’s sub-James Dean frat-boy rebel Kirk, and a Spook and Uhura relationship (that seems to be added to the plot just to shock the fans) but it soon escalates into destroying the planet Vulcan. Complete screwing up the rest of Trek history/future. This isn’t a minor tweak to the Star Trek universe as we’ve been told. It’s a massive change, and I feel a kind of slap in the face to original Trek and it’s follow ons.

There are also two rather lame and obvious plot exposition scenes, The Mind-Meld scene (with a rather annoying echo) and the ‘Alternative Universe’ scene on the bridge which seems to be aimed straight at the audience. Also Spock appearance in the film seems to be just to offers helpful plot exposition, telling the characters exactly what they need to do in order to progress, and then what do once the film is complete.

The insertion of the fabled ‘Kobayashi Maru’ test completely misses the point of the original story (given in Wraith of Khan). Kirk is a now cocky punk who cheats out of entitlement, rather than someone who stubborn refuses to believe in the no win situation.

There are also a couple of forced comedy moments, Kirk ‘hilarious’ medical condition and Mr Scott appearance onto the ship, which again just feel shoe horned in between other scenes to lighten the mood.

Another massive problem with the plot is how convenient everything falls into place. Young Spock uncharacteristically, in a fit of anger, dumps Kirk on a planet which just happens to house both Future Spock and Mr Scott. Mr Scott is then able to become the USS Enterprise’s new chief engineer as the old chief engineer (Greg Ellis from Command & Conquer Red Alert 3) killed himself in a extremely stupid manor earlier in the move. Uhura, Kirk are all promoted in similar and equally unconvincing matter.

Thus at the end of movie everyone is placed in their rightful place, meaning Kirk is Captain of the Star Fleet flagship before even officially leaving the academy,

This film is Star Trek for people who have never seen it before, and who Hollywood believe need simple characters and the story explicitly explained in monologue, it’s also completely missing Star Trek moral centre, replaced with a post 9/11 let’s kill the space terrorists.

I’m in no rush to see a sequel.

Last Bank Holiday Weekend

After writing a load of Blog post last last month, I’ve been finding it hard to keep up this pace this month. Here is a post I started last week but I didn’t get any finished, and it’s not very good but bare with me.

As you probably noticed Last weekend was another glorious long bank holiday weekend. Bank holiday weekend are awesome, it’s only a shame they all seem to bunch up at the same time of the year, then again, it’s around this time we have the best weather. So I’ll sit back on the fence on this issue, and make you regret ever starting to read this sentence. Sorry.

Highlights of last weekend included on Saturday Conor again got to go to the Boro match with the school, and got to see Boro comfortably beaten by Man Utd and edge closter to relegation, but he enjoy the day anyway. While he was at the match the wife and I did a bit of clothes shopping in the town as we need some news glad rags for our night on the tiles. Saturday night saw myself, the wife and a few friends a having a good time on the Teesside Princess which is a boat which travels up and down the Tees (the nice parts), while you have a meal and a few drinks. We had a great time, and after this then we headed off into Middlesbrough town until the wee hours.

I didn’t go to crazy with the drink as on Sunday Morning I was up bright and early to do a sponsored walk up the Cleveland Hills to raise money for the Karate Club. I’ve done this before but this time we are raising the money so the club can go and train with Shingo Ohgami. The walk itself was good, it was a sunny nice day (if a little windy when we got to the top of the hill) so when we got to ‘Eston Nab’ at the top of the hills you could see for miles and miles. Redcar, Middlesbrough and Stockton all in clear view. I’ve uploaded pictures of the walk to my Facebook account.

On Monday the wife and I went shopping in the town again I went out a bought myself a nice new mobile phone, which I’ll tell you more about in another blog post.
